Vitamin B and Bone Health

The National Osteoporosis Foundation purports that some 10 million Americans have osteoporosis with another 34 million having low bone mass and are at jeopardy of developing the disease.

In a new published study , 188 post-menopausal Moroccan women were assessed as for the role vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine (amino acid) and parathyroid hormone (bone metabolism) levels played in bone density. Bone mineral density is a factor in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and osteopenia (low bone mass). The study participants were given written questions to assess their individual risk of developing osteoporosis. In addition, bone density calculations were made using x-ray absorptiometry.

The study conductors generally concluded that osteoporosis was more common in women who were older, shorter in stature and weighed less, compared to women within the normal bone mineral density range. This conclusion was perhaps expected, however, the significant finding and indeed the most important showed that the women who already had osteoporosis also had an elevated homocysteine level. The women who did not have osteoporosis generally had lower homocysteine levels. Predictably, increased levels of homocysteine and decreased amounts of vitamin B12 were also directly linked to diminished bone mineral density in the spine and hip.

This study in my estimation, gives us no new revelation, however, since it is a verifiable research study conducted by health professionals it does offer credence to what the natural health establishment already new.

As always, first and foremost, eat a healthy diet free of processed food and burnt animal fat, eat primarily organic vegetables, fruit and hormone free meat that has not been genetically altered. Drink 8 glasses of clear spring water everyday and breathe in clean air and with the help of a quality natural supplement program you'll be on your way to better health. Oh yes and don't forget to get your body moving, have fun, enjoy life!
