Edema, formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy, is an abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin or in one or more cavities of the body. Water retention problems arise when fluid is not removed by the lymph system properly, it is retained in the body tissues where it causes swelling (edema).
Ways to prevent Water Retention
Eating a well balanced diet will go a long way in eliminating water retention.
It is absolutely necessary to drink no less than eight glasses of clean water daily.
This is a must; if you are overweight, and you know if you are, take steps now to reduce your weight and please do it slowly without putting your health at risk. Ask your doctor what your optimal weight should be.
Stop drinking alcohol, coffee and tea. These are dehydrating drinks.
To help pump fluids back into the circulatory system exercise regularly, especially by walking,.
When sitting or lying down try to elevate the affected area (eg. leg, arm, etc.).
To help drive fluids back into your circulatory system and support circulation, wear support stockings or elastic sleeves.
Stop using table salt ( sodium chloride). Ask your doctor for an alternative.
