Remedies for Sunburn
When the skin is overexposed to the ultra violet rays from the scorching sun, sunburn is caused. Sunburn is not to be taken lightly, it can and has caused skin cancer. Fair skined people are more susceptible .
Ways to prevent Sunburn
- Use sunscreen or moisturisers with high SPF content if you plan a extended period out in the sun.
- Wear protective clothing such as a wide brim hat and a loose long sleeve shirt.
- If your trying to get a suntan, apply a high SPF content sunscreen and stay out in the sun incrementaly, short peroids of time.
- Consider a non toxic tanning lotion instead of sun tanning.
- Drink alot of water to re-dehydrate the damaged skin.
- Use a cool compress applied over the burn area.
- Take cool gentle showers and dry off by dabbing.
- Wear cool fabrics that are loose fitting to prevent irritation.
- Avoid using bath soaps with fragrance, they tend to dry skin, instead use a mild herbal soap.

Green tea: Bath in a tub of tepid green tea. The tannin in the tea draws out some of the pain and can soothe the redness.
Skim milk: To make a cool and refreshing liquid for the skin, mix 4 cups water with 1 cup skim milk and add a few ice cubes. Soak towel in the concoction and apply the towel directly on the burn for about 20 minutes. Repeat as you feel fit.
Aloe vera: Natural herb; Best applied directly on burn area with a gel or oil. Available at any health food store.
Witch hazel: Natural herb; Using a moistened cloth with witch hazel apply to the affected areas for soothinhg relief. Can also be applied with a cotton ball for treating small areas.
Vinegar: Draw a tub of cool water and mix in 1 cup of vinegar.
Mustard oil: Rub directly on sunburned skin and allow to it dry, this will reduce the burning sensation from the skin.
Cucumber: Take fresh slices of cucumber and rub directly over burned area for soothing relief.
Lavender oil: Gently rub oil to affected burn area for immediate relief. Peppermint oil also works.
Herbal bath: Put 3 or 4 drops of soothing herbal oil in a bath filled with tepid water. Chamomile and lavender essential oils are good choices.
Antioxidants: Take Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements to an already healthy diet.
