Dentists are more likely to encounter loss of memory and kidney ailments possibly due to long term exposure to the mercury that is found in some tooth fillings.
Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland conducted a study involving about 180 dentists and concluded That upward to 4 times the average level of the mineral mercury was found in their nails and in their urine. Additionally the dentists were likely to have kidney conditions and problems with loss of memory.
Dr. Ewan Macdonald noted in a report in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine "These differences could not be directly attributed to their exposure to mercury, but as mercury exposure at higher levels is known to cause similar health effects an association cannot be ruled out." He added, "We found several differences in the health and cognitive functioning between our dentists and the control group."
The use of mercury in tooth fillings has been a common practice for more then a century. It is feared that mercury is giving off poisonous vapors that are specifically harming anyone who has such a filling and the dentists treating a patient.
It is theorized that mercury fillings may be affecting the kidneys and other major organs and also there is concern of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.
The researchers in Glasgow compared mercury levels in urine, hair and nail samples, and the results of psychomotor skills, response times, word recall and health problems of the 180 dentists and an equal number of volunteers.
Dental associations say the use of mercury in tooth fillings is safe when mixed with other metals and that there are no scientific studies to prove a link between the mercury filling and health problems.
